Community Matters

1

Food Security

We’re entering a critical moment in the fight against food insecurity. Rapidly rising costs of living, limited grocery access, and heavy reliance on seasonal wages mean more working families and seniors are struggling to put food on the table. Local food banks and community organizations are already stretched to capacity, and upcoming instability in SNAP and WIC threatens to push even more households into crisis. With winter approaching and transportation barriers increasing isolation, access to consistent nutrition is becoming less certain by the week — a growing emergency that directly threatens the health, workforce stability, and resilience of our mountain towns.

2

Housing

Mountain communities across the region are facing a severe housing crisis driven by soaring costs, limited supply, and intense competition from short-term rentals and second homes. Local workers, educators, first responders, and young families are being priced out of the communities they sustain, often forced into long commutes or unstable, seasonal housing. Yet expanding development is not a simple solution — high construction costs, limited land, and a shared desire to protect open space, small-town character, and the natural beauty that draws people here create understandable hesitancy toward large-scale growth. This tension leaves the region struggling to preserve both the workforce and the sense of place that define life and community in our mountain towns.
